This test is aslo known as Anti-Microsomal Antibody; Thyroid Autoantibodies Test; Antithyroid Antibodies Test; Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody Test; Thyroperoxidase Antibody Test; TPO Test; Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPO); TPOAb; Microsomal antibody; Antithyroid microsomal antibody.
The Anti-TPO test measures presence and level of antithyroid microsomal antibodies against thyroid peroxidase in the blood. Your body produces these antibodies when cells in your thyroid become damaged. Your thyroid is a gland in your neck that makes the thyroid hormones. These hormones help regulate your metabolism.
Your doctor may order this test along with other tests to help diagnose thyroid problems or other autoimmune conditions.

- Thyroid Disorders Evaluation: It is commonly ordered to assess the presence of autoimmunity in thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. These conditions involve abnormal immune responses against the thyroid gland, resulting in either hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's) or hyperthyroidism (Graves').
- Unususl Symptoms: If a person presents with symptoms suggestive of thyroid dysfunction, such as fatigue, weight changes, hair loss, or changes in heart rate, the test may be ordered to investigate autoimmune thyroid conditions.
