An ultrasound scan is a medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. It’s also known as sonography.
The purpose of imaging test called pregnancy ultrasound that uses sound waves to create a picture of how a baby is developing in the womb (uterus). Also, this machine test is utilized to examine the female pelvic organs during pregnancy.

A doctor recommends an ultrasound-pregnancy test to evaluate two things:
- To evaluates the overall health, growth and development of the fetus.
- To detects certain complications and medical conditions related to pregnancy.
First trimester of pregnancy (first 12 weeks) - During this period an ultrasound may be done to:
- confirm pregnancy
- examine the fetal heartbeat
- determine the baby's age
- estimate a due date
- examine for multiple pregnancies (such as twins and triplets)
- examine the placenta, uterus, ovaries, and cervix
- diagnose an ectopic pregnancy (when the fetus does not attach to the uterus) or miscarriage
- look for any abnormal growth in the fetus
Second trimester (12 to 24 weeks) and the third trimester (24 to 40 weeks or birth) -During this period an ultrasound may be done to:
- monitor the fetus’ growth & position (breech, transverse, cephalic, or optimal)
- determine the baby’s sex
- confirm multiple pregnancies
- look at the placenta to check for problems, such as placenta previa (when the placenta covers the cervix) and placental abruption (when the placenta separates from the uterus prior to delivery)
- check for characteristics of Down syndrome (normally done between week-13 and week-14)
- examine for congenital abnormalities or birth defects
- check the fetus for structural abnormalities or blood flow problems
- detect the levels of amniotic fluid
- determine if the fetus is getting enough oxygen
- diagnose problems with the ovaries or uterus, such as pregnancy tumors
- compute the length of the cervix
- recommend other tests, such as amniocentesis
- establish an intrauterine death
During an ultrasound earlier in the pregnancy, you may will need to have a full bladder for the technician to get a clear & best ultrasound image. You may be asked to drink 2 to 3 glasses of liquid an hour before the scheduled test. You shouldn’t urinate before your ultrasound so you stay or arrive at your appointment with a full bladder.
