Haemogram + ESR
This test is aslo known as Complete Hemogram or CBC with ESR, CBC-ESR, Complete Blood Picture (CBP) with ESR, Full Hemogram, HMG Test.
A Hemogram plus ESR provides the most comprehensive overview, combining the detailed cell counts of a, Hemogram with a specific indicator for inflammation (ESR), making it better for detecting underlying infections, autoimmune, or inflammatory conditions.
Input your data
Your healthcare professional may order this combination in the following situations:
1. Investigating Specific Symptoms
- Persistent Fever or Chills: To check for bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.
- Unexplained Fatigue or Weakness: To screen for anemia (low hemoglobin) or chronic illness.
- Joint Pain and Stiffness: Especially if an autoimmune condition like Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupus is suspected.
- Unexplained Weight Loss: Often a marker for chronic inflammation or certain cancers.
- Ongoing Body Aches or Swelling: Linked to high inflammation levels
2. Monitoring Known Conditions
- Autoimmune Disorders: Monitoring "flare-ups" in conditions like lupus or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
- Treatment Effectiveness: Seeing if medications (like steroids or biologics) are successfully reducing inflammation.
- Chemotherapy/Radiotherapy: Monitoring the impact of these treatments on blood cell counts.
3. General Health Screening
- Routine Check-ups: Included in annual physical exams to assess overall health status and detect "hidden" inflammation that may not yet show symptoms.
- Pre-Surgery Evaluation: To ensure there are no active infections or clotting issues (via the platelet count) before a procedure.
4. Narrowing Down a Diagnosis
Since the CBC looks at blood cell quality and the ESR detects systemic inflammation, they work in "synergy" to rule out or focus on specific categories of disease.
- Infection vs. Inflammation: High white blood cells (from CBC) plus high ESR often points strongly toward infection.
- Anemia Type: Helping determine if anemia is due to simple iron deficiency or a more complex chronic inflammatory disease.
- Fasting: Fasting is normally not required for a hemogram and ESR test. But if your doctor has ordered other tests along with it (like a lipid profile or glucose test), you may need to fast for 8-12 hours.
- Medications: Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and vitamins that you are taking, as some of them, can interact with ESR results.
- Hydration: It is advisable to stay hydrated by drinking enough water before the test, as this makes it easier for the technician to draw blood.
- Clothing: Always wear loose clothing that eases while taking blood sample.
- Lifestyle: Avoid intense physical exercise, alcohol or smoking before the test, as these can affect for an inaccurate results.
