This test is aslo known as Anti-PLA2R, PLA2R, Autoimmunity, DQ allele, ELISA, Membranous nephropathy.
To diagnose and monitor the treatment of certain kidney diseases
Primary membranous nephropathy (pMN) is an autoimmune disease characterised by the accumulation of immune complexes in the renal glomeruli, which means your body is attacking healthy cells in your body. If you have MN, your body’s immune system makes an antibody (a protein that normally helps fight infections) to a protein called the phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R). Instead of targeting an infection, these antibodies attack certain healthy cells in your kidney. As a result your kidneys will not be able to filter the proteins in your bloodstream, which allows them to leak into your pee. It is the most common cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults.
Anti-phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) antibodies are highly specific for the diagnosis of primary membranous nephropathy (pMN).
If you are already known to have anti-phospholipase A2 receptor positive membranous nephropathy, this test can be used to monitor response to treatment or detect relapse.
If you happen to have membranous nephropathy (MN) then it can lead to health issues and complications as bolow:
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
- High cholesterol (higher than average levels of fat in your blood).
- High blood pressure.
- Kidney disease.
- Kidney failure.
- Pulmonary embolism (PE).
- Severe swelling.
Contact a healthcare provider if you notice unexplained swelling in your legs, feet or arms. This is often one of the first signs of MN.
If you’ve received a diagnosis of MN already, contact your healthcare provider if you notice any changes in your symptoms or overall health. They can adjust your treatment and find a way to help you feel better.
Input your data
Anti-phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) test may be recommended by your healthcare provider for the diagnosis of primary membranous nephropathy.
In cases where you are already known to have anti-phospholipase A2 receptor positive membranous nephropathy, you doctor may use PLA2R to monitor response to treatment or detect relapse.
