This test is aslo known as Mitochondrial Antibody, Mitochondrial Antibody (AMA).
The purpose of this test is to detect an autoimmune condition known as primary biliary cholangitis, also sometimes called primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
This test detects and measures the amount of AMA in the blood.
Your doctor may recommend AMA test when he or she believes that you have an autoimmune disorder such as PBC which is affecting the liver based on your symptoms that involve:
- Itching (pruritus)
- Jaundice
- Weariness
- Abdominal pain
- Enlarged liver
However, most of the patients affected with an early autoimmune disorder, do not have any symptoms. At the start, the condition is often detected when an a patient has abnormal results on a liver panel (elevated liver enzymes), especially alkaline phosphatase (ALP).
Normally, this test is ordered along with several tests that are used to recognise or rule out other causes like infections, viral hepatitis, drugs, alcohol abuse, toxins, genetic conditions, metabolic conditions, & autoimmune hepatitis that lead to liver disease or injury.
